Which gate should you choose?
Choose a sliding gate if your driveway is short, narrow, or sloped, or if the gate opens onto a busy street — it slides horizontally along a track and never swings into traffic or up against an incline. Choose a swing gate if you have room for the gate to arc open, want the classic estate look, and prefer a simpler, lower-maintenance mechanism with fewer moving parts on the ground.

When space is the constraint
A sliding gate travels horizontally along a track, driven by a rack-and-pinion operator. Because it never arcs outward, it needs zero swing clearance — it just needs lateral room alongside the driveway for the gate to retract into.
That makes it the answer for short driveways, gates that open directly onto a street, and properties where a swinging gate would block a walkway or a parked car.
The trade-off: the track sits on the ground, so it needs to stay clear of debris and drain properly. See electric & automatic gate repair if yours is binding or off-track.

When you have the room
A swing gate opens on hinges like a door, driven by an arm or hydraulic piston — single-leaf for narrow drives, dual-leaf for wide ones. Fewer ground-level components means less to clean and fewer things to bind.
It's the traditional estate look, and it's usually the simpler system — provided you have the arc space and the ground is reasonably level where the gate travels.

What if your driveway is on a slope?
In the hills — Hollywood Hills, Beverly Hills, Calabasas, Encino — the slope decides the gate. A standard swing gate will scrape the incline as it opens. Here's how it's solved.
Sliding gate (recommended)
Moves horizontally, so the incline is irrelevant. The most reliable choice for a steep driveway — it just needs the ground graded for the track and lateral clearance.
Rising hinges
If you want a swing gate on a slope, rising (uphill) hinges tilt the gate upward as it opens so it clears the rising ground.
Push-to-open
Reversing the swing direction so the gate opens away from the slope — a simple fix when the grade only rises on one side.
Steep driveways need proper grading and professional installation — this is the one scenario where getting it wrong is expensive. Let us survey the slope first.

I’m my garage is a bit bigger than normal as it’s 7feet and 3 inches. All the other vendors wanted to put in a standard 7feet door and fill in with plywood the extra area around the garage. Elad was able to get a custom door made exactly for my garage specifications in less than half a week. I even had an old car that doesn’t run in my garage and they helped me push out of the garage. Nothing but true professionalism. Highly recommend!

I'm super happy with the quality of the work that was done. I had an old double wooden door that became detached from the framing. The door and framing had to be replaced. I obtained 3 separate quotes from local companies. The quote I got from them was hard to pass up. Super soft sell and informative. 3 days later they came out with the new door, fixed the framing and installed the door. Looks great, works great and I couldn't be more happy. I highly recommend this company.

So I called Elad to fix my springs. My door & opener were both over 25 years old. Elad gave me an estimate to fix both springs. He listened to my thoughts about just investing in a new door & opener. We talked out the options, and we both agreed that getting a whole new system would be the best option. His price for a whole new door package, new opener, and old door haul away was so good that I immediately said yes. He squeezed me into his full schedule. I'm very grateful and pleased. Sliding vs. swing gates, answered
Which is better, a sliding gate or a swing gate?
Neither is universally better. Sliding gates win when space is limited, the driveway is sloped, or the gate opens onto a busy street. Swing gates win when you have room for the arc, want the classic look, and prefer fewer ground-level components.
What kind of gate is best for a steep driveway?
A sliding gate. Because it moves horizontally, the incline doesn't affect it. If you want a swing gate on a slope, you'll need rising hinges or a push-to-open configuration so it clears the rising ground.
Do sliding gates need more maintenance?
Generally yes. The track sits at ground level, so it collects debris and needs to stay clean and draining properly. Swing gates have fewer ground-level parts, though their hinges and arms still need periodic service.
Which gate is safer near a busy street?
A sliding gate. It never swings outward into the sidewalk or roadway, which makes it the safer choice where the driveway meets traffic directly.
Which handles high winds better?
Sliding gates. Because they don't swing, wind has far less leverage on them — which also makes them well suited to heavy, industrial, and commercial installations.
Can I convert my swing gate to a sliding gate?
Often, yes — but it depends on whether you have the lateral clearance for the gate to retract into, and whether the ground can be graded for a track. We'll assess your driveway and tell you straight.
