Do you need a permit for a driveway gate in LA?
Usually, yes. In California you generally need a building permit for a gate over six feet tall (measured from the lowest adjacent grade), and a separate electrical permit for any motorized or automatic gate that needs power run to it. On top of that, most cities have setback and visibility rules, motorized gates must meet fire department access requirements, and an HOA can require its own approval even when the city doesn't.
The details are highly localized — LA County, the City of Los Angeles, and each surrounding city all set their own rules. Below is what to expect, and where to confirm it.
What gets checked
Five things that decide your permit
Nearly every gate approval in Southern California comes down to these.
Height
Most jurisdictions require a building permit for any fence or gate over 6 feet, measured from the lowest adjacent grade. Front-yard gates often face tighter limits than side or rear.
Electrical
Any motorized gate needs a separate electrical permit to run power to the operator and safety sensors. This is the one people forget.
Setbacks & visibility
Cities mandate how far a gate must sit back from the sidewalk or street, and cap height near corners so drivers can see. This is why a gate can't always go right at the property line.
Fire & safety access
Motorized gates must let first responders in — typically via an emergency key switch or approved sensor — and meet entrapment-protection standards with photo eyes and safety edges.
HOA approval
If you're in a planned community or HOA, you'll likely need architectural approval too — even if the city doesn't require a municipal permit.
Plans & structure
Larger gates and their columns may need scaled plans and engineered footings that comply with the California Building and Residential Codes.
Why it's worth doing right
An unpermitted gate is a problem you inherit
Skipping the permit doesn't make it go away. Unpermitted work can surface during a home sale, trigger a stop-work order or removal notice, and complicate insurance claims if something goes wrong.
The safety requirements aren't red tape either. Entrapment protection — photo eyes and safety edges — exists because a heavy powered gate can seriously injure a child or a pet. Fire-access provisions exist so paramedics can reach your door.

Confirm before you build
Where to check your specific rules
Permit rules, fees, and zoning ordinances are set locally and change over time. Always confirm with the authority that covers your address before you commit to a design.
- 1Find your jurisdiction. Unincorporated LA County, the City of Los Angeles, and cities like Burbank, Glendale, Calabasas, and Santa Monica each run their own building and safety department with different rules.
- 2Ask Building & Safety about height and zoning. Confirm the height limit for your gate's location on the lot, and the required setback from the sidewalk or street.
- 3Ask about the electrical permit. If the gate is motorized, confirm what's needed to run power to the operator.
- 4Check fire department access requirements. Confirm what emergency access device your local fire department requires on an automated gate.
- 5Get HOA architectural approval. If applicable, submit your design before fabrication — not after.

I had an exceptional experience with Elad and his team. Not only were they the cheapest by far but they were quick and professional. I’m my garage is a bit bigger than normal as it’s 7feet and 3 inches. All the other vendors wanted to put in a standard 7feet door and fill in with plywood the extra area around the garage. Elad was able to get a custom door made exactly for my garage specifications in less than half a week. I even had an old car that doesn’t run in my garage and they helped me push out of the garage. Nothing but true professionalism. Highly recommend!

I'm super happy with the quality of the work that was done. I had an old double wooden door that became detached from the framing. The door and framing had to be replaced. I obtained 3 separate quotes from local companies. The quote I got from them was hard to pass up. Super soft sell and informative. 3 days later they came out with the new door, fixed the framing and installed the door. Looks great, works great and I couldn't be more happy. I highly recommend this company.
