What gate opener repair covers
A gate opener, or operator, is the motor and control system that moves your gate. Repair covers the motor, the gearbox, the control board, the backup battery, the start capacitor, the limit switches, the safety photocells and the remotes, keypads and receivers that tell it what to do.
Most dead gates come down to one of those parts, not the whole unit. We test the system end to end, fix the part that failed, and only recommend a new operator when the motor itself is done.
Book a Repair →Why your gate opener stopped working
These are the faults we find most often, roughly in the order we check them.
Worn backup battery
Backup batteries typically last around five years. A weak one stops the gate during outages or makes it crawl.
Power surge or tripped breaker
Surges and loose wiring can trip the circuit or damage the control board.
Control board failure
The board is the opener's brain. A failed board makes the gate unresponsive or erratic.
Capacitor or stripped gears
The motor hums but won't turn, or spins without moving the gate. Classic capacitor or gearbox failure.
Blocked photocells
Dirt, webs or sun glare on the safety sensors make the gate stop or reverse for no visible reason.
Limit switches out of adjustment
The opener loses track of open and closed, so the gate overshoots, stops short or slams.
Remote, keypad or receiver
Dead remote batteries, signal interference or a failed receiver can make a healthy motor look dead.
Track, wheel or hinge drag
A sagging swing gate or worn slide wheels make the motor strain, overheat and fail early.
Heat and moisture
Direct heat can trip a thermal cutoff, and water in the control box can short the electronics.
Need the whole gate fixed, not just the opener? See electric & automatic gate repair.
Swing-arm vs. slide gate openers
Your gate's operator type changes what fails and how we repair it. Swing gates use an arm that pushes the gate open on its hinges. Sliding gates use a gear motor that drives a rack along the track.
Choosing a new opener? Read our guide to automatic gate openers or sliding vs. swing gates.
How we find the fault
A methodical check, so you pay for the part that failed and nothing else.
- 1Check power and the battery. Breaker, supply wiring and backup battery voltage come first.
- 2Test the control board and capacitor. We read the board's status lights and test the start capacitor.
- 3Inspect the drive. Gearbox, coupling, chain or rack, and the manual release are checked for wear or disengagement.
- 4Clean and test the safety devices. Photocells are cleaned and aligned, and limit switches are reset.
- 5Check the gate itself. Hinges, wheels and track are inspected so the motor isn't fighting a dragging gate.
- 6Cycle and confirm. We run full open and close cycles and test remotes, keypads and the safety reverse.
How long gate openers last
Life expectancy depends on the operator type and how often the gate cycles. Here's what we typically see.
10 to 20+ yrs
Hydraulic swing operators
Very durable on heavy swing gates when seals and fluid are maintained.
8 to 15 yrs
Sliding gear motors
Lifespan depends heavily on a clean track and aligned wheels.
6 to 12 yrs
Underground operators
More exposed to water collecting in the ground box.
8 to 15 yrs
Control boards
Boards and capacitors often need service before the motor itself.
Commercial and high-traffic gates cycle far more often, so expect the shorter end. For property and business gates, see commercial gate repair.

Gate opener repair questions, answered
Why is my gate motor humming but the gate won't move?
Usually a failed start capacitor, stripped internal gears, a broken drive coupling or a manual release left disengaged. The motor turns but the power never reaches the gate. It needs a diagnosis to tell which.
Why did my gate opener stop working after a power outage?
A power surge can damage the control board, and an aging backup battery may not hold enough charge to run the gate. Check the breaker first, then call us to test the board and battery.
Why does my gate open and then reverse or stop halfway?
Dirty or blocked photocells, misadjusted limit switches, or a gate that drags on worn wheels or sagging hinges. Each makes the operator think something is in the way.
How long does a gate opener motor last?
Most residential gate motors last about 10 to 15 years, and commercial or high-traffic units about 5 to 10. Control boards and backup batteries usually need service before the motor itself does.
Should I repair or replace my gate opener?
Repair when the fault is a battery, capacitor, sensor, remote or single board. Replace when the motor is near the end of its life, parts are no longer available, or repairs keep stacking up. We'll give you a straight recommendation.
How much does gate opener repair cost?
It depends on the operator and the part that failed, so every job is quoted after inspection. Contact us for a quote, and you approve it before any work begins.
